Rebuilding a Life-saving Blog

Welcome to Storm Guides!

I started this site with the help of some friends for one reason. You!

I spent 15 years tracking storms on TV. Though the years I covered hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, snow storms, heat waves, and every so often, some beautiful weather that made folks happy (I liked those days best). During those storms, I helped create a new way of communicating with the viewers - not through just the TV, but online. I called it the Severe Weather Blog. Tens of thousands of people would log on as my weather team tracked the storms through our viewing area. Anyone could ask us a question about the storms, or their safety, or travel plans. Basically, they could ask anything they wanted to know about the weather and we would answer them live online! On several occasions people said that live blog saved their lives.

I’m not sure why, but after I left tv weather, my former station stopped doing the Severe Weather Blog. All the work we had put into creating a life-saving tool for you and your family disappeared. There have been several times since then when storms were threatening my own home that I went online looking for help and simply couldn’t find any.

That is not ok.

A couple of weeks ago, friends and family were concerned about a big storm system coming our way. A national weather company was putting out numbers and figures and people didn’t really understand what they were or what they meant. They just knew it was going to be scary.

Again, that is not ok.

So, I launched a Facebook Live video chat session. I put up radar images and showed people where the storms were and where they were heading. My friends started sharing the page to their friends and pretty soon, people I didn’t know and had never met were asking me whether the tornadoes were going to hit their homes. Some people had to take shelter, and thanks to the live video, they were able to watch and keep up with the storm on their cell phones, even while hiding in their closets. Everyone said they slept better that night because they were able to get information about the weather that eased their fears, lowered their anxiety, and gave them a sense of peace.

That’s why we do this. Frankly, that’s why every meteorologist in the country should do this. But, since they’re not, we will!

This is Storm Guides. We will gude you through the storm using our Big Bad Weather Blog. You’ll see on live video our analysis of the storms. You’ll be able to ask us questions about how the weather will impact you and your family.

Best of all, this is a free service. We will never charge you for information that could save your life or protect the ones you love. If you’d like to support our work, we will gladly accept donations. But, the main focus for us is on serving you when you need us most.

So, follow us on Facebook. Bookmark our website. Tell your friends about us and have them follow us, too. And, don’t hesitate to reach out with any question you may have.
