Too Much Rain
In weather there sometime is too much of a good thing. We’re at that point with the rain in the Southeastern U.S. Over the weekend, there were several rivers in the South that were either at or overflowing their banks. This widespread river flooding can cause real problems to infrastructure, property, and commerce.
Unfortunately, those same areas that are already dealing with high streamflows are the exact same areas looking at more heavy rain this week. The image above is from the Weather Prediction Center’s Quantitative Precipitation Forecast for the next three days. We are expecting at least an inch of rain from Central Texas all the way to the Georgia - South Carolina border. But, then there are pockets where we’ll see more than two inches of rain from East Texas into Mississippi, and in Alabama into Georgia.
Not only will this extra rain add to the river flooding problems, but it could also set up some flash flooding problems as well. It’s those flash floods that can really become dangerous for people. Remember that more people die annually from flash flooding than from lightning and tornadoes combined. It is avoidable, however. Don’t ever drive on a roadway where you can’t see the pavement. Turn around! Don’t drown!
