I-20 Rain

It’s going to be another wet day in much of the south, especially along the I-20 corridor. This map is from the NAM model showing the expected rainfall this evening. You can see heavy rain from West Texas, through Louisiana and into Mississippi. There is a risk for flash flooding as a result, especially from East Texas through Jackson, MS.

While the rain will be heavy, we aren’t expecting an outbreak of Big Bad Storms. This is pretty much mostly rain. But, again, flash floods can be very dangerous, especially because people make really bad decisions in them.

This potential flash flood event could be a little more dangerous than most because of timing. The heaviest rain appears to be coming to the areas that are already the most saturated after sundown. That means that there could be flash flooding in the dark, making it harder to see what’s happening to the roadway right in front of you.

The best advice for your drive home this evening is to check the road conditions before you leave, and be patient as you drive.
