Stormy First Half of the Week

This is going to be a wet and stormy first half of the week across much of the South. Not only are we looking at a risk for some Big Bad Storms, but there’s also a risk for more flooding in areas that received way too much rain in February.

Let’s start with the storms…

Today, we have storms traveling through Tennessee and the Appalachians. The Storm Prediction Center is focusing on the Memphis area for a slight risk today. On Tuesday and Wednesday, that risk shifts further south, along the I-10 corridor from Central Texas through Biloxi, Mississippi. Below are the Day 2 and Day 3 outlooks for the same areas.

Fortunately, the organization for this system isn’t looking as bad as it did last week. Plus, it is coming in more slowly than the models initially predicted and could lose some power in the process. But, that slower moving system now creates another big problem; flooding.

This is the cumulative precipitation forecast through Wednesday. While the I-10 corridor has the biggest risk of strong storms, it’s the I-20 corridor that’s looking at the most rainfall. Parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia are looking at another 4” to 5” of water before the end of Hump Day. The ground in those areas are still saturated, and this extra rain can quickly lead to runoff and flash flooding.

The good news is the rest of the week looks fine.
